  • What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is an evidence-formed and non-invasive system of integrative medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of musculoskeletal system focussing on misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs. Mislignments (subluxations) may be caused by many heredity, lifestyle or postural factors. The goal of Chiropractic is to correct misalignments to keep the spine and nervous sytem functioning optimally and educate patients along the way. Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands (as well as special tables and equipment) with highly-skilled manual adjustment techniques and soft tissue/muscle therapies, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints. Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a Chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling. One of the most common therapies a Chiropractor uses is spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), which can comprise a variety of manual adjustment techniques. Specific training in SMT allows Chiropractors to provide highly-skilled and precise adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function. For many conditions, such as low back pain, Chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advisable, a Chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals. Where other conditions exist, Chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition. Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions. There are many reasons to seek Chiropractic care: -Back pain -Neck pain -Headache -Whiplash Strains and sprains -Repetitive strain injury (RSI) -Work and sports injuries -Arthritis -Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs Chiropractic is a regulated health profession, recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces and American states. Almost one million patients in Alberta rely on Chiropractic care every year to help them live healthy, active lives. • What is the goal of treatment? How may visits will I need?
Chiropractic is a process, not an event. Treatment for each person is determined based on their individual needs. Some patients feel better after one treatment, but most require a structured treatment plan to resolve their issues. Some folks may seek care during an acute event ('my back went out') or injury, which may require a few treatments closer together, then once things are stabilized, occasional treatment will be recommended to keep you pain free and maintain your newfound restored function and movement. Pregnant patients will experience many changes throughout gestation, regular Chiropractic can help to relieve discomofrt and create the optimal pelvic environment for baby. Although pain-free, others will seek treatment simply for general wellness, as most of us do not have perfect genetics, diet, lifetyle, sleep, work or driving posture, keeping alignment will support optimal function will encourage the prevention of future ailments. Treatment Goals 1.Acute and chronic care -relieve pain -reduce muscle spasm and inflammation -increase flexibility -restore function and range of motion -treatment plan appropriate to specific individual -return to normal activities of daily living as quickly as possible 2. Rehabilitation -increase strength -increase and maintain flexibility -stabilize 3. Prevention -correct postural habits and modify -ergonomic and gait modification -minimize recurrences -lifestyle and nutritional considerations
  • What is that sound?
You may notice some sounds during treatment, including clicking, popping or 'cracking' and potentionally the release of the drop table or othr modalities (such as massagers or Ultrasound Shockwave Therapy or the beep of Class IV laser therapy). The sound is the release of dissolved gas from the fluid in the joint space, identical to the sound you hear when you crack your knuckles. During an adjustment, the surfaces of a joint get separated, reducing the pressure in the joint cavity (cavitation). Gas in the synovial fluid is released, forming a air space. This space then collapses upon itself, resulting in a clicking sound. The effects of this process remain for a period of time, ranging from a few seconds to hours while gas is slowly reabsorbed. Although movements have occured, sometimes adjustments will not create any sounds.

  • Is Chiropractic safe?
Because Chiropractic is non-invasive, the risk of a serious side effect is extremely low. While most people feel a sense of relief, it is possible that following a Chiropractic treatment you may experience mild soreness that should go away quickly. As you may have been out of alignment for a while, your body may have become used to the dysfunction that we are working to correct. Before you have a Chiropractic treatment, ask to discuss any concerns you have with your Chiropractor. If you have any severe or lasting effects or concerns, talk to your Chiropractor about the contributing factors (ie. genetics, weight, activity, posture, work etc.) and what healthcare options and homecare you can do to help you accelerate yorur healing and achieve your personal best
