CHIROPRACTIC
CARE

What Is Chiropractic?

Provided by clinic owner and operator, Dr. Claudia Sacco, B.Sc. D.C., Chiropractic treatment for the whole body is the core of our wellness model and the achievement of optimal health and quality of life for our patients. Our goal is not only recovery, but prevention of future ailments.

Chiropractic is the art and science of healing. The word “Chiropractic” comes from ancient Greek and means "done by hand.” Doctors of Chiropractic are primary healthcare providers that are extensively trained to diagnose, treat and help prevent conditions and disorders related to the back, neck, pelvis, extremity joints and the effect they have on the nervous system and all related tissues of the body. The main form of treatment Chiropractors deliver is called an adjustment – a non-invasive procedure consisting of a precise directed movement to address misalignment, help relieve pain and discomfort, and restore proper joint range of motion and function.

With commitment to our treatment plans, patients efficiently progress from the relief phase to the correction phase. From there, patients are enabled to strengthen and stabilize, and finally graduating to maintain their progress with ongoing "wellness care" as needed for ongoing enjoyment of improved quality of life.

Dr. Claudia Sacco uses a variety of gentle and effective techniques including gentle manual manipulation, Activator, drop-table, Logan Basic and Flexion-Distraction techniques, Kinesiology taping, custom Orthotics, and more.

Dr. Claudia is also an ICPA member offering Webster certified pregnancy and pediatric care.

Your First Visit

Prior to your first visit, please take a few moments to complete the appropriate New Patient Intake paperwork found within your confirmation email or arrive 10-minutes early to complete a paper version, as this will provide our team with the required information to evaluate your health needs to ensure the utmost care.

During your first visit, you will share information about your health, such as any injury or surgery, medications, family health history and your reasons for seeking Chiropractic care at this time. A physical assessment may include: posture, range of motion, reflexes, vitals, and other orthopaedic and neurologic tests. Gentle manual, Activator, Flexion-Distraction or drop-table adjustments may take place as well as some soft tissue techniques for enhanced range of motion. Your required treatment plan will be outlined for your optimal results. Other modalities may be recommended for accelerating healing and treatment plan progress. Gown or shorts are provided if needed. Some patients may require x-rays in order to provide greater insight into their condition, at that point in time we will provide you with the required referral information.

After your treatment, alongside a treatment plan schedule, some homecare recommendations may have been suggested to you including gentle stretches or exercises, water/diet/lifestyle modifications, ice/heat application. Expect to see our Doctors and technicians for follow-up treatment regularly at first while things stabilize until re-exam criteria is achieved. After improvement, our Chiropractors will determine graduation from relief phase of care to corrective phase of care and finally to 'wellness maintenance' occasional or seasonal care (depending on your work, sleep or driving posture, diet and activities supporting your best function). Your adherence to your prescribed treatment plan and homecare recommendations may accelerate healing and your graduation from relief, to correction, to wellness maintenance timeline as well. As they have accumulated over time, chronic conditions may require additional time to correct. Your compliance with our team's recommendations will ensure optimal results!

What Are The Benefits of Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic offers safe, effective, non-invasive care for all ages and ranges of function. The benefits of Chiropractic adjustment include pain relief, correction and prevention of future ailments.

  1. The first benefit of Chiropractic treatment is correcting subluxation (misalignment) in the body stopping the inflammatory processes at the joints and at the nerve root at the level of the subluxation. The result is the symptoms, such as pain, goes away!

  2. Secondly Chiropractic adjustment corrects the biomechanics, increases the mobility of the joints thus decreasing the accelerated wear and tear, degenerative changes or accelerated aging of the spine.

  3. The third and perhaps the most important benefit of the adjustment is by correcting the subluxation the communication between the brain and the tissue is improved resulting in optimum function and an optimum chance for health and longevity of that tissue thus preventing dysfunction down the road.

  4. Finally by correcting multiple subluxations the adjustment stimulates the nervous system in multiple areas of the body which results in a better overall posture and biomechanics, while supporting internal health thus giving the body the best chance for optimal health, function and longevity.

The 4 Ramifications of Subluxation & The 4 Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustment

Subluxation is a term used to describe a misalignment or functional problem with a spinal joint that affects associated joints, muscles, tendons and nerves. Think of it like a kink in a garden hose blocking the water from flowing naturally. Chiropractors are nervous system and musculoskeletal experts whose safe, effective and non-invasive care for all ages and ranges of function provides patients with pain relief, correction and prevention of future ailments.

Ramifications of Subluxation

  1. The most obvious ramification is localized inflammation at the joints and at the nerve root at the level of the subluxation, resulting in pain and/or other symptoms.

  2. The second ramification is an aberrant change in the biomechanics at the level of subluxation resulting in accelerated wear and tear, degenerative changes or an accelerated aging of the spine at the level of subluxation.

  3. The third ramification is interference to the communication from the brain to the tissue innervated at the level of subluxation (brain messages to tissues are blocked). This results in a decrease in function of that tissue, predisposing the tissue to dysfunction down the road.

  4. Where there are multiple misalignments there will be multiple tissue levels functioning at less then optimal levels resulting in an overall poor posture and biomechanics, lowered support of internal health, predisposing the body to dysfunction and other related health concerns.

Benefits of a Chiropractic Adjustment

  1. The first benefit of the adjustment is by correcting subluxation (misalignment) in the body stops the inflammatory processes at the joints and at the nerve root at the level of the subluxation. The result is the symptoms, such as pain, goes away!

  2. Secondly the adjustment corrects the biomechanics, increases the mobility of the joints thus decreasing the accelerated wear and tear, degenerative changes or accelerated aging of the spine.

Causes of Subluxation & Chiropractic Care for Correction

Subluxation is a term used to describe a misalignment or problem with a spinal joint. The World Health Organization defines a vertebral subluxation as a functional problem related to a joint and the structures associated with the joint such as the muscles, tendons and nerves.

The three main stressors that result in a subluxation are physical, chemical and emotional and can be caused by:

  • poor work, driving, or sleep posture

  • genetics or degenerative conditions

  • repetitive strain and physical activities or previous injuries

  • lack of muscle tone, excess weight and other lifestyle factors such as stress and diet

We need to address all of these components in order to get optimal results.

Dysfunction can present itself in various ways such as pain, inflammation and restricted movement of the joint. Some types of dysfunction, such as a

subluxation green box3.png

sprain, strain or muscle injury, will not appear on an x-ray. Chiropractors are trained to identify dysfunction that does not appear on imaging through the use of manual examination an palpation, objective tests and non-imaging diagnostic tests. There are many safe techniques and alternatives available for treating various conditions.

A Chiropractic adjustment (re-alignment) is a highly-skilled and precise movement usually applied by hand to the vertebrae of the spine or other joints of the body. An adjustment corrects the subluxated or rotated joint (misalignment) to restore proper movement to improve its function. When a joint is adjusted, an air bubble may escape which may cause a popping noise ("cavitation"), similar to when you crack your knuckles. Gentle Chiropractic adjustments can provide instant pain relief and regular treatment can correct various health conditions over time.

Depending on the nature of the problem, as part of your treatment plan you may also require soft tissue or muscle release techniques such as Active Release Therapy (ART) or Graston (see here or below), muscle stimulation like post-isometric relaxation and therapeutic exercises or stretches at home for an ongoing period of time in order to relieve your pain and improve overall function and mobility. Patient adherence to their prescribed treatment plan and homecare recommendations may accelerate healing and graduation from relief, to correction, to wellness maintenance timeline at an accelerated rate as well.

Soft Tissue Techniques

Chiropractors are nervous system and musculoskeletal experts, meaning they have advanced understanding of the complexities of the components of the spine and skeleton, the nerve tissues that controls the activities of the body and all of the muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments connected. Alongside various Chiropractic adjustments for improved alignment and function, both of our Chiropractors may utilize soft tissue techniques and/or top-of-the-line technologies for accelerated healing and a thorough approach to achieving and maintaining proper function.

Active Release Therapy (ART) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Fascia is densely woven, connective tissue covering every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein as well as all of our internal organs. Similar techniques such as, Myofascial or Muscle Release Technique (MRT) or tools such as Graston, may also be utilized to release fascia/connective tissues to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with a blend of soft tissue techniques. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur?

  1. Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)

  2. Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)

  3. Hypoxia (not getting enough oxygen)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is an ART or MRT treatment like?

Every ART or MRT session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

"Webster" Pregnancy Technique

Webster Technique is a certified, safe and gentle technique utilized by Chiropractors to treat changes in the pelvis and in the round ligaments that may be causing discomfort and other concerns during pregnancy. It is our goal to keep Mum safe and comfortable as she progresses while supporting the likelihood of a vaginal birth with limited or no intervention, should this be her choice.

Chiropractic treatment not only helps keep Mum comfortable and relieves discomfort as the body rapidly changes during pregnancy, the Webster Technique helps reduce the effects of sacral subluxation, SI joint dysfunction (Sciatica pain), and abdominal changes which allows for neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis to become improved and support her needs as she prepares for labour and delivery.

Infant & Pediatric Care

Gentle Chiropractic care has been provided to children for over a century. Our Chiropractors are members of the The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), founded in 1975 by Dr. Larry Webster, celebrated Logan College of Chiropractic alum (where our owner, Dr. Claudia Sacco, completed her Doctorate), is considered the ‘Grandfather of Pediatric Chiropractic’. The ICPA provides specific pediatric training and offers a wealth of information for the public and practitioners.

From the birth process and continuing through childhood development, the stressors causing vertebral subluxation in adults, have the same impact on a child. Today’s kids are strictly scheduled and busier than ever, participating in elite level activities, experience greater amounts of school related emotional stress or competition and are often not getting enough sleep, unregulated physical activity (play), water and a well-balanced nutritional diet.

Chiropractic care for children offers your family a solid foundation for wellness. Throughout pregnancy, birth, and childhood, the Chiropractic lifestyle offers choices and benefits for your greater health and well-being. As is often the case in pediatric care the absence of symptoms doesn’t equate to absence of dysfunction or stress.

There are many benefits to holistic health care for kids, including improved function and development of healthy habits. In our clinic, it is important that our team builds trust and good rapport with your kiddos to avoid anxiety related to treatment - we like for your children to think of our clinic as an enjoyable Doctor's office experience - no painful booster shots here! A series of occasional Chiropractic and acupuncture visits help your children better understand their body, feel their best and guide them on a path of preventative health and wellness into adulthood.

Custom Foot Orthotics

metsascan.png
FOOT and heat shadow.png

There are many health benefits to orthotic insoles that have been custom-made to your needs including:

  • improved gait (the way you walk) and improved posture (the way you stand)

  • reduced pain due to reduced or eliminated nerve interference or inflammation

  • prevention of degeneration due to better supported joints, discs, nerves and tissues from toe-to-head!

If your feet are functioning abnormally, you may experience pain or degenerative problems in other areas of your body over time.  Orthotics allow for an improved gait (the way you walk) and better weight distribution, joint and spinal alignment and better overall biomechanics in every step.

Our custom foot orthotic insoles are designed to provide maximum foot control by combining 4 layers (top cover, cushioning, module and bottom reinforcement) with accommodations to create the best support. They offer excellent motion control for those who require better foot function in everyday activities from work to play.

During your gait assessment visit, you will complete a dynamic scan as part of your biomechanical evaluation with Dr. Claudia Sacco. A foam impression cast may also be taken if required by the plan. Our Foot Levelers Foot Scan analysis offers a complete diagnostic system that determines abnormal foot function resulting in extremely accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Although custom orthotic insoles are commonly covered in extended health benefits (insurance) plans, every plan is different and may require specific information regarding each patient's condition and orthotics manufacturing. For speedy reimbursement from your plan, please check your coverage prior to your appointment in order to ensure that your requirements are met as your claim must be manufactured to the exact specifications of your plan.

To book your gait assessment, please see online booking. Learn more about your needs by completing a FREE Foot Levelers Foot Scan before your next visit.

Car Accident "MVA" Protocol

If you have been in a car accident recently, it is important that you are assessed by a Chiropractor as soon as possible. Not only will they address any Whiplash Associated Disorders and start you on your path to healing, they can also provide you access to special coverage for treatment with limited or no out-of-pocket expenses for the patient.

Under the mandate of the Alberta Diagnostic Treatment Protocols (DTPR), your auto insurance will cover a minimum of 10 Chiropractic treatments for minor injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) regardless of who is at fault. Depending on the severity of the injuries you may qualify for more treatments. Accident treatment is billed directly to your insurance company as part of a "bodily injury claim" (distinct from an "auto damage claim").

MVA treatment claims are time sensitive and must be processed within 10 days of the accident; therefore you must tell the Doctor (your General Physician/M.D. or our Chiropractors/D.C.'s) that you are seeking treatment for bodily injuries sustained in a MVA so the proper paperwork can be submitted. You will be assessed and then a treatment plan will be developed for your healing. Every Albertan is entitled to an additional stipend of Chiropractic care coverage for more serious injuries (under 'Section B'), but access to these benefits varies based on your auto policy.

Please contact us for further information.
